WHO 126th Executive Board Meeting

As a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) in official relations with the World Health organization, WSMI attended WHO’s  126th Executive Board which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, between January 18-23, 2010. In her opening speech, Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO, provided a broad introduction to recent challenges in global health. In her speech, she also commented: ” (…) vitamin A supplementation has been implemented as a life-saving measure in 66 of 68 countries with a high burden of child deaths (…) persuading people to adopt healthy behaviours is one of the biggest challenges in public health (…) this is a world where an estimated 44 million pre-school children are overweight or obese, we have to take action.” WSMI notes these remarks with interest and reaffirms that a country with a health system which fully encourages self-care and responsible self-medication can expect to have a healthier population.
