The WSMI Symposium on Self-Care in Healthcare Systems, and 16th WSMI General Assembly / 7th WSMI Asia-Pacific Regional Conference
7 November 2008
at the WHO Congress on Traditional Medicine,
Beijing – China, November 7-9, 2008.
On the occasion of the WHO Congress on Traditional Medicine which was held in Beijing, China between November 7-9, 2008, the World Self-Medication Industry (WSMI) and Member Association in China CNMA were invited to organize two symposia, together with the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP): a Symposium on Self-Care in Healthcare Systems (WSMI) and a Symposium on Medicines – Traditional, Alternative & Complementary (FIP-WSMI).
The WSMI Symposium on Self-Care in Healthcare Systems,
and 16th WSMI General Assembly / 7th WSMI Asia-Pacific Regional Conference
Close to 300 delegates attended the WSMI Symposium on Self-Care in Healthcare Systems which reviewed and advanced the role that self-care plays in underpinning health systems. The keynote speech by WHO Assistant Director General Dr Carissa Etienne was one of the three presentations by WHO Staff to the two Symposia. In her presentation, Dr Etienne made explicit the role that self-care has to play in healthcare systems, her area of responsibility within WHO. The general importance of self-care in China and the UK, and the specific role of self-medication were first considered, before the symposium focused on the central role played by consumer and patient education and information.

The FIP-WSMI Symposium
on Medicines – Traditional, Alternative & Complementary (TACM)
This symposium, which attracted some 200 delegates, focused on the role that Traditional, Alternative and Complementary Medicines play in modern and complementary healthcare. This symposium first ‘showcased’ developments in TACM and then reviewed the progress in development and regulation of this increasingly important sector of medicines. The symposium was co-chaired by Professor David Briggs (Office of complementary Medicines, TGA Australia) and Professor Alan Bensoussan (National Institute of Complementary Medicine, Australia), and brought together experts in TACM from all continents.

Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) gave the opening address during the overall congress opening ceremony, in which she stressed the preventative role of public health. “With the universal rise of chronic noncommunicable diseases, she said, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and mental disorders (…) traditional medicine has much to offer in terms of prevention, comfort, compassion and care.” (full speech available on WHO’s website: http://www.who.int/dg/speeches/2008/20081107/en/index.html).
The WHO International Forum
Central to the WHO Congress on Traditional Medicine was the International Forum on Integration of TM/CAM into health system, organized with the Ministry of Health of China and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of China, to mark WHO’s 60th anniversary as well as the 30th anniversary of the Alma-Ata Declaration.
WSMI was represented at the WHO International Forum by Mr Hans V. Regenauer, WSMI Chairman; Mr Christopher Combe, WSMI Chairman-elect; Mr Seiichi Sato, WSMI Chairman for the Asia-Pacific Region, Dr Hubertus Cranz, Director-General of AESGP and Dr David E. Webber, WSMI Director-General, who made a presentation on behalf of all WSMI members.
