Self-Care in New-Zealand: a pathway to improved national health
July 2009

The New Zealand Self-Medication Industry Association (NZSMI) has produced a self-care paper in the form of a 10-page brochure targeted to all health stakeholders: patients and consumers,  government, healthcare professionals, healthcare industry, and private health insurers. As in the majority of countries around the world, New-Zealand's national health bill continues to grow under the weight of technological advances, the rise of chronic preventable diseases and an ageing population. Policy makers therefore seek solutions that are affordable, practical and will have lasting impact. From defining Self-Care to detailing some of the benefits of Self-Care, the brochure explains that Self-Care has the capacity to form part of a broad sweep of measures that can address national health issues. It concludes that Self-Care is one of the demonstrably proven policy reforms that can ease the pressures falling on GPs, hospitals and government resources, at the same time providing better health, enhanced wellbeing and greater satisfaction for all.  [Download the brochure]
