WSMI contributes to Workshop on combating counterfeit medicines
13-14 February 2004 

As part of our continuing work with WHO in the global effort to combat counterfeit medicines, WSMI attended the WHO-organised Pre-ICDRA Satellite Workshop on Counterfeit Medicines on 13th and 14th February 2004, in Madrid Spain. A well-received presentation entitled ‘Counterfeiting in Latin America’ was made by Héctor Bolaños, WSMI Vice-Chairman for Latin America and Director General of Industria Latinoamericana de Automedicación Responsable (see photograph). WSMI DG David Webber was also invited to chair the first afternoon session. Key conclusions from the meeting were the common agreement that there was a need to identify counterfeiting as a specific crime, establish stiffer penalties, and develop regional and international cooperation.
