WHO Global strategy for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases
March 2008

WSMI welcomes the WHO Global strategy for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases presented to the Executive Board in January 2008, and its associated Action Plan. WSMI was pleased to contribute to a formal consultation on the Action Plan in March 2008, at WHO headquarters in Geneva. A full version of WSMI’s input may be seen on http://www.who.int/nmh/NCD_action_plan/en/index.html

The four noncommunicable diseases which make the largest contribution to mortality in the majority of low- and middle-income countries are cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes. These diseases share the same underlying preventable risk factors (e.g. tobacco use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity) in which individual self-care and self-medication are key.
