WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic
February 2008

WSMI congratulates the World Health Organisation on the launch of the WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, 2008. The report provides comprehensive information on the status of effective tobacco control measures in almost every country and identifies gaps in information, data and policies that must be filled. Unless urgent action is taken, more than one billion people could be killed by tobacco during this century. As emphasised in the report, country healthcare systems hold the primary responsibility for treating tobacco dependance. People need help to quit tobacco use. Integrating tobacco cessation into primary healthcare, accessible well-staffed quit lines and effective prescription and nonprescription pharmacological treatments such as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), are all useful in providing help to quit tobacco use. WSMI is proud of its mission to develop an international environment which improves the opportunities for people to manage their own health through the responsible use of safe and effective self-medication products, including nicotine replacement therapies.
