1st World Congress on Healthy Ageing and 1st European Conference on Patient Empowerment
May 2012

WSMI was pleased to note WHO’s participation in two important recent conferences: the 1st World Congress on Healthy Ageing which took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 19-22 March 2012 and was co-sponsored by the WHO and the Malaysian Healthy Ageing Society (MHAS); and the 1st European Conference on Patient Empowerment which took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 11-12 April 2012 and was organized in close technical collaboration with the WHO regional Office for Europe, under the auspices of the Danish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, together with Denmark’s Ministry of Health, the Danish Committee for Health Education, the Careum Foundation Switzerland and the Expert Patient Programme England. These two conferences acknowledge the need to enhance self-care practices by patients and individuals across the life course. WHO’s website notes that “the focus on patient self-care practices has grown substantially, and much care and treatment takes place at home, leaving patients and family with greater responsibility for their own health”.
