WSMI supports the” Students' Initiative” of consumer healthcare 2nd seminar in Ghana

The second seminar of the “Students’ Initiative” on consumer healthcare was held on the Thursday 25th March 2004 at SSNIT Conference Hall Harper Road Adum, Kumasi-Ghana. The program started with a Radio interview which lasted 30 minutes with the top morning radio show host, Mr Kwame Adinkra of FOX FM, Kumasi.

The theme of the second seminar was: Herbal Medicine: its quality and efficacy on the health of the consumer. It was organized as the demand of herbal products is high in the metropolis.

The main objectives of the seminar were to educate and inform herbal medicine producers on:

1.    FDB Law and Product Registration procedures

2.    Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) compliance and prohibited advertisement of products 

Radio announcements were made over 6 days inviting all Herbal Medicine Producers in the metropolis to attend the seminar. 68 attended the seminar.

Dr M. L. K. Mensah, senior Lecturer of Pharmacy KNUST presented a paper on herbal medicines. He informed participants that the school (Pharmacy Department, KNUST) is open to all herbal medicine producers to research and analyze products for quality, safety and efficacy before marketing.

Mr Eric Owusu, Head of Drug Division of the Food and Drugs Board was the second speaker. His presentation focused on product registration, prohibited advertisement and good manufacturing practices.
