New list of reclassified products in the UAE
October 2011

The health authorities of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have reclassified as OTC products a number of ingredients previously available on prescription only. The new OTC list contains 991 brands. The World Self-Medication Industry (WSMI) and MESMI (Middle-East Self-Medication Industry) welcome this important step forward which will benefit the health of the people of the UAE, a leading country in the Gulf Region. A greater availability of nonprescription medicines empowers people to take better care of themselves and supports health awareness. In the UAE and Gulf countries, as in most countries around the globe, the killer diseases of the 21st Century such as heart attack, stroke, cancer and diabetes are on the rise and it is essential that governments support people to lead healthy lifestyles and to practise self-care.
