WHO commends WSMI for fruitful collaboration
February 2010

WSMI has received confirmation from the World Health Organization (WHO) of the Executive Board's decision to maintain our official relations for the three year period January 2010-December 2012.
As the year 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of the association, WSMI takes particular pride in receiving this ackowledgment of successful collaboration with WHO. WSMI is looking forward to continue to support global health efforts such as tobacco control and the fight against chronic diseases (including heart diseases, stroke, diabetes, some chronic lung conditions and cancers).
Chronic diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Over the next decade, if not addressed effectively, these conditions will increase by 27% in Africa,
25% in the Middle-East and 21% in Asia/Pacific, accounting for 75% of all deaths globally. A vital approach in the future is in people being encouraged to look after themselves better.  Self-care and self-medication strongly support good healthcare behaviour and disease prevention.
