WSMI welcomes WHO self-care report
July 2009

The report of the WHO Regional Consultation on "Self-Care in the Context of Primary Health Care (PHC)" which took place in Bangkok, Thailand, 7-9 January 2009 highlights the important role of self-care in health systems: "Self-Care is an integral part of PHC. With the high burden of disease and increase in noncommunicable diseases, there is a need to refocus on health promotion, disease prevention and self-care during illness and in revitalization of PHC". As a strong advocate of the important role of self-care in health systems, WSMI welcomes this document from WHO. The benefits of self-care to society are empowered patients with higher self-esteem, improved wellness, longer life expectancy and reduced use of healthcare services. A country which fully encourages self-care can expect to have a healthier population and redeploy scarce resources in priority areas.
