Guidelines for treatment of tobacco dependence

2010 was particularly significant in WHO for Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) in the treatment of tobacco dependence. A working group on ‘Article 14 Guidelines’ (treatment of dependence) continued work; a drafting meeting in New Zealand was attended by a WSMI representative. The 4th ‘Conference of the Parties’ (CoP4) met in Uruguay in November, again covered by WSMI delegates, and adopted these Guidelines (see: http://www.who.int/fctc/en). The Guidelines make helpful reference and recommendations encouraging governments to implement measures to support treatment of tobacco dependence, including conducting national situation analyses and strategies, health system interventions, quit lines, brief advice, country experience sharing, behavioural support and medicines.
