Consumer Health Products Canada (CHP Canada), WSMI’s member association in Canada, and its members launched their first annual Self-Care Week in Ottawa on 17-21 October 2011. Intended to be an annual event, the week provided the consumer health products industry and CHP Canada the opportunity to officially celebrate and promote self-care as a valuable practice that needs to be supported.
The week kicked off with a half-day education session attended by key senior Health Canada officials, a number of interested MPs and CHP Canada members who had come to Ottawa to meet with politicians who have an influence over health policy. The program focused on the value that self-care can provide to Canadians and to their health-care system. CHP Canada’s research on how Canadians manage minor ailments provided the supporting data.
CHP Canada members and staff also met during the course of the week with over 20 government officials, including members of the Standing Committee on Health, the Senate’s Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology, the Prime Minister’s Office, Privy Council Office and with Prime Minister Harper. The messages were quite well received and a number of parliamentarians formally expressed their intention to follow up in writing with the Minister of Health.
Self-care Week was supported by CHP Canada’s new “Self-Care is the First Step in Health Care” campaign which launched on Monday 17 October 2011 as well.
