The World Self-Medication Industry is a federation of over 50
member associations representing manufacturers and distributors
of nonprescription medicines on all continents. We support the
development of self-medication industry associations around the
world to aid in the understanding and development of responsible
self-medication. WSMI requires member associations to develop
voluntary codes of advertising practice and encourages consumer-friendly
labeling.
Companies in the self-medication industry, research, manufacture
and distribute nonprescription medicines and dietary supplements,
designed and labelled for use without medical supervision. The
public is made aware of these health products via direct advertising
and they are available in pharmacies and, in many countries around
the world, in other outlets.
In our role as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in official
relations with the World Health Organization, we represent the
self-medication industry and contribute to WHO's Public Health
goals through our specialized expertise.
WSMI also represents the self-medication industry to other international
organizations, such as ICH, WIPO, Codex Alimentarius, the World
Medical Association, the International Pharmaceutical Federation
and the International Council of Nurses.
